Description
Suitable for marine aquariums, magnesium occurs in natural seawater at relatively high levels (1300–1400 mg/L). It is a vital component of chlorophyll, which drives photosynthesis. Without this process, plants, algae, and corals that we keep in our reef tanks would not be able to thrive.
Magnesium also plays a key role in balancing calcium concentration and alkalinity. Normally, calcium binds with carbonates and bicarbonates to form calcium carbonate. While this compound is an essential building block for corals and calcareous algae, it should ideally be produced through biological processes in the right place. If left unchecked, calcium carbonate can form chemically, reducing calcium, alkalinity, and trace elements without offering any benefit. Magnesium helps slow down this unwanted reaction, ensuring stable water chemistry.
Keeping magnesium at the right level is crucial for healthy coral growth and for maintaining proper calcium and alkalinity values. Magnesium levels can be reduced through algae growth, heavy kalkwasser use, or imbalances in salt mixes with low magnesium content. Regular testing is therefore essential to prevent long-term issues and to keep a thriving reef system.
The Salifert Magnesium Test Kit is available now from Ocean in a Box at a great price.
