The Spot-cheeked Surgeonfish (Acanthurus nigrofuscus) is a graceful and hardy algae-grazing tang, appreciated for its subtle beauty and constant browsing behavior. Highly active, it contributes to algae control while adding movement and character to reef aquariums.
A mature aquarium of at least 125 gallons is recommended, with strong water flow and open swimming areas to suit its active lifestyle. As with most tangs, it is best to keep only one per tank unless housed in a very large system and introduced simultaneously to reduce territorial disputes.
Their diet should be heavily algae-based, including marine seaweed and spirulina, supported with quality herbivore preparations. Occasional supplements of mysis shrimp or krill provide added nutrition. Consistent algae feedings boost immunity, help reduce aggression, and ensure vibrant coloration.
