Calcium alone is not enough for corals to build their skeletons or for calcareous algae to grow. Carbonates and bicarbonates are equally essential, as they also play a vital role in stabilising pH levels within the ideal aquarium range of 8.1 to 8.4.

The combined concentration of carbonate and bicarbonate is referred to as alkalinity or carbonate hardness. For a healthy, stable reef, this value should remain consistent and not deviate more than 5% from the optimal level of around 2.8 meq/L — in other words, fluctuations should stay below 0.14 meq/L.

The Salifert KH/Alkalinity Test Kit is designed to detect even small shifts in alkalinity, measuring in precise steps of 0.1 meq/L with a clear, sharp colour change. Each kit provides enough reagents for approximately 100 to 200 tests. Used alongside the Salifert KH + pH Buffer, adjustments to alkalinity can be made easily without disturbing the system’s pH balance. This test is suitable for marine, freshwater, and even pond water applications.
