Description
When oxygen-poor zones (anaerobic areas) are lacking in the aquarium, or if denitrification isn’t working effectively, nitrate can begin to accumulate. This issue is also common in tanks with a heavy biological load — for example, when too many fish are kept in relation to the tank size, or when feeding is excessive.
Excess nitrate leads to problems such as nuisance algae growth and reduced coral growth rates. In reef aquariums, nitrate should ideally remain below 1 mg/L, though fish-only systems can tolerate higher concentrations. A drawback of many nitrate test kits is their vulnerability to amine interference, which can make actual nitrate levels appear lower than they are.
The Salifert Nitrate Test Kit avoids this problem entirely, delivering quick and reliable results in under 3 minutes. It measures across a wide range from very low to very high concentrations (approx. 0.2–100 mg/L as total nitrate). Each kit provides around 50 tests and offers two testing ranges: Low range (0.2–10 mg/L) and Medium range (2–100 mg/L).
The Salifert Nitrate Test Kit (1–200) is available now from Ocean in a Box at a great price.
