The Orange Surgeon (Acanthurus olivaceus) is a striking algae-grazing tang, valued for its bold coloration and graceful swimming. Highly active, it spends much of its time browsing on algae, making it both a functional and visually appealing addition to mature reef aquariums.
A large aquarium of at least 125 gallons is recommended, with strong water movement and long open spaces for swimming. Only one tang should be housed per tank unless kept in a very large system and introduced at the same time to minimize aggression.
Their diet should be plant-focused, including marine-based seaweed and algae such as nori or spirulina, supported with quality herbivore preparations. Supplemental meaty foods like mysis shrimp or krill provide variety and balanced nutrition. Consistent algae feeding helps boost immunity, reduce aggression, and maintain vibrant coloration.
